He had previously suffered a heart attack while at Ajax in 2010, and it was from that moment that his career started taking the wrong turn.

Sno was first loaned to Bristol City, where he scored 3 goals in 24 Championship games, before joining RKC Waalwijk on a free transfer.

Despite impressing in his first season at the club, the midfielder was allowed to sign for NEC Nijmegen the following summer, …

Greece pumped for crucial South Korea clash

Greece face a crucial World Cup opening match against South Korea on Saturday with a win for either side offering three valuable points in a group that also includes Argentina and Nigeria.

European champions in 2004, Greece failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup and lost all three group games as defending champions at the 2008 Euro.

Coached by 72-year-old German Otto Rehhagel, who guided Greece to that Euro 2004 title, the Greeks are also eyeing a better turn-out than at their sole previous appearance at the World Cup, in 1994, when the team not only managed to lose all three games, but also failed to score.

But midfielder Christos Patsatzoglou insisted Tuesday that the team, who have lost 2-0 to Paraguay and secured a 2-2 draw with North Korea in warm-up matc…

Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund outstrip both in terms of average attendance, with 81,178 at their Signal Iduna Park home, although Germany s top flight being an 18 as opposed to a 20-team competition contributed to their overall attendance coming in third at 1.38m.

All three sides enjoyed better attendances than Real Madrid, who attracted an average of 71,280 to the Santiago Bernabeu and 1.35m in a season that concluded with them being crowned European champions…

Transfer speculation will not distract Arda

Arda Turan wants to remain at Barcelona until his contract expires in 2020, despite growing interest from elsewhere.

The 30-year-old was linked with a big-money move to the Chinese Super League in January, but claims to be aware of other suitors.

However, he has no plans to leave Camp Nou, having signed from Atletico Madrid in July 2015.

But I am very happy at Barcelona and I want to stay until the end of my contract.

Werner and Havertz need strong personalities to succeed at Chelsea – Kuranyi

Chelsea duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz need strong personalities to succeed at Stamford Bridge, according to Kevin Kuranyi.

Germany stars Werner and Havertz both joined Chelsea at the start of the season, from RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen respectively, amid high expectations but it has been a challenging start to life for the pair in the Premier League.

After scoring 28 goals in the Bundesliga and 34 across all competitions last season, Werner has found the back of the net on 11 occasions and supplied nine assists for Chelsea this term, including six Premier League goals.

Havertz – who became Chelsea s most expensive outfield player ahead of the 2020-21 campaign – has shown glimpses of his quality with six goals and six assists, though he has largely stru…

September 12 too early – Lampard wants Chelsea´s Premier League start pushed back

Frank Lampard has implored the Premier League to push back the start of the 2020-21 season for clubs still competing in Europe.

Lampard s Chelsea travel to face Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League on Saturday, albeit with limited hopes of reaching the quarter-finals as they face up to a 3-0 deficit from February s first leg.

Manchester City face Real Madrid 24 hours earlier at the Etihad Stadium, 2-1 to the good and with a more realistic tilt at playing in the final in Lisbon on August 23.

Manchester United and Wolves remain in the Europa League, which concludes on August 21 in Cologne.

Lampard, who will be without captain Cesar Azpilicueta and winger Christian Pulisic at Bayern after both sustained hamstring injuries during Saturday s …

Bosnia faces exclusion from FIFA, UEFA competition

Bosnia s Football Federation (NS/FSBIH) was threatened to be excluded from international competitions as it has failed to adopt statute changes requested by FIFA and UEFA, a statement said on Monday.

Only 27 out of 60 delegates backed the changes aimed at replacing an ethnic-based tripartite presidency by a single president, the statement on NS/FSBIH Internet side said.

A support of two-third majority was needed in order to have the changes adopted.

The presidency s members represent the country s three ethnic communities Croats, Muslims and Serbs.

FIFA and UEFA had requested the statute changes as their representatives visited the former Yugoslav republic late last month.

UEFA official, Marc Leblanc, was quoted at the federation site as saying a…

Will defensive concerns cost Tottenham next season?

Last season Tottenham clinched fourth place in the Premier League and a Champions League spot.

It was an amazing achievement by Harry Redknapp and his side considering Tottenham were in the relegation zone when Redknapp took over in 2008.

Injuries

Two of Tottenham’s key defenders Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate are injury-prone. They always have been injury-prone but the Tottenham boss is now concerned about his two England defenders.

Redknapp expressed his concerns about the pair on Sky Sports saying: Jonathan will not be fit for the start of the season,

He s in a position where he can t train or kick a ball. Ledley has come back and his knee is not great and he has a groin problem.

Both Woodgate and King will miss the start of th…

Pellegrini focused on final title push

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini hesitated to label a 3-2 win at Everton as decisive in terms of the Premier League title race.

Pellegrini s men returned to the top of the table on goal difference following a breathless triumph at Goodison Park a ground where they had tasted defeat on their previous four visits.

Liverpool and Chelsea can leapfrog City by winning forthcoming games against Crystal Palace and Norwich City respectively.

However, victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, in City s game in hand, will almost certainly leave the destiny of the title in the hands of the 2011-12 champions ahead of West Ham s visit to the Etihad Stadium on the final day.

Pellegrini is still taking nothing for granted as a battle for supremacy featuring numerous twists an…

Courtois not thinking about future

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois insists he is not thinking about the future ahead of Saturday s UEFA Champions League final.

The Belgian has been on loan at Vicente Calderon from Chelsea since 2011, and his form in Atleti s title-winning campaign has prompted some to suggest he may be kept at Stamford Bridge next season.

However the 22-year-old stressed his sole focus for the moment was this weekend s showdown with local rivals Real Madrid in Lisbon.

It s a great feeling to be champion of Spain, he is quoted as saying by The Guardian. I am not sure yet what happens next season.

We have the Champions League final (on Saturday) and then the World Cup, so now is not the time to think of the future. I have two years contract (left) with Chelsea, so we wil…
